Our Air Fryer Safety Scoring Methodology

Every product we review is evaluated using a structured, material-focused framework. No brand sponsorship influences rankings.

How the 100-Point Score Is Calculated

Each air fryer is evaluated across five weighted categories. The final score reflects food-contact material safety, construction integrity, and long-term durability factors.

  • Food-Contact Materials 30 points
  • Coating Transparency 25 points
  • Construction Quality 20 points
  • Heat Stability & Design 15 points
  • Manufacturer Transparency 10 points
  • Maximum Total Score 100 points

1. Food-Contact Materials 30 Points

Highest scores are awarded to glass and verified food-grade stainless steel. Lower scores are assigned to coated aluminum or unspecified alloys.

Material Type Points Description
Full glass bowl + stainless steel rack 30 pts Highest safety rating, completely inert materials
Stainless steel basket (verified grade) 25 pts Excellent durability, requires verification of 304 grade
Mixed metal with partial coating 15 pts Some areas may have synthetic coatings
Primary PTFE-style coated basket 0-10 pts Relies on synthetic non-stick coating

2. Coating Transparency 25 Points

We assess whether the manufacturer clearly discloses coating composition and chemical profile.

Disclosure Level Points Description
No synthetic non-stick coating used 25 pts Completely coating-free construction
Coating disclosed and certified PFOA-free 15 pts Manufacturer provides certification
Limited disclosure 5 pts Vague descriptions, no certifications
No material transparency 0 pts No information about coatings

3. Construction Quality 20 Points

We evaluate the physical build and durability of each unit:

  • Weld integrity and fit
  • Thickness of metal components
  • Latch durability
  • Heat insulation design
  • Hinge quality
  • Overall fit and finish
  • Component durability

4. Heat Stability & Design 15 Points

We consider operating temperature ranges, airflow design, and how materials respond under repeated heat exposure. Higher scores go to units with excellent thermal management and materials that maintain integrity at maximum operating temperatures.

Key Evaluation Criteria:

  • Maximum rated temperature vs. actual performance
  • Thermal cycling resistance
  • Heat distribution uniformity
  • Exterior temperature during operation

5. Manufacturer Transparency 10 Points

Clear material disclosure

Manufacturer clearly states all materials used in food-contact areas

Accessible customer support

Easy to reach support for material verification questions

Certification documentation

Provides certifications for material safety claims
